this is completely disabled on Undernet, X on undernet is a channel service, not an email server. X is fairly overloaded at the moment, we don't need to add new features that can be abused to poor X.

If you want to contact someone, I suggest you try email.

Why can't users just use e-mail to leave messages to their friends who aren't online at the time that they are? Or use ICQ, YM, MSN, Or if it is really that urgent, why not give them a call or send them SMS. The net has got a bunch of things around that you can use to contact someone. Undernet is not the last resort to do these things and definitely X doesn't need this add-on feature and definitely, Isomer is absolutely right.

Yah really... getting onto IRC is trickier than running YIM... seems to me that attempting to duplicate 'features' from other nets/protocols/software will just bog the system down. E-mail is also a goodalternative; if you don't want to reveal your 'true' e-mail address, there are LOTS of places to sign up for an anon box. And when all else fails, use POTS or snail-mail. 8)

Let me guess... someone from Dal.Net asked for this, right? (Dal.Net ran a msgserv bot for storing 'offline' notes and such).

NFI but there's always a possibility because Dal.net has got memoserv. ( i haven't been on dalnet for awhile so i have no clue if memoserv still works)
